News: 2 dead when self-driving Tesla crashes in The Woodlands

HOUSTON, TX – Two people were killed Saturday when the self-driving Tesla they were riding in ran off the roadway, slammed into a tree, and caught fire.

KHOU reports that the crash happened at about 11:25 p.m. on April 17, on Hammock Dunes Place in the Carlton Woods subdivision of The Woodlands. A 2019 Tesla Model S was traveling at a high rate of speed when it failed to negotiate a turn, left the roadway, and collided with a tree. It then burst into flames, trapping its two occupants inside.

Both individuals died at the scene. Responding firefighters found their bodies in the front passenger seat and a rear passenger seat. Mark Herman, the Harris County Precinct 4 Constable, said that investigators are “100 percent certain” that no one had been driving the vehicle at the time, meaning that its self-driving function was engaged.

The victims have been identified only as a 59-year-old man and a 69-year-old man.
