News: 2 killed, 7 injured in leak at La Porte chemical plant

LA PORTE, TX – Two people were killed, seven were injured, and dozens more were hospitalized for precautionary measures following a leak at a chemical plant in the town of La Porte yesterday evening.

According to Click2Houston, authorities received reports of a leak at the LyondellBasell Industries facility located at 1515 Miller Cut-Off Rd at approximately 7:35 p.m. on July 27. Emergency responders from several services were dispatched to the area following a “mass casualty event.”

Two people were pronounced dead at the scene, while seven others are said to be injured. A total of 30 were hospitalized, although it is unclear whether they were injured or if they were transported as a precaution.

The leak apparently broke out in the plant’s acetyls unit, which caused 100,000 pounds of glacial acetic acid to spew into the atmosphere. The leak was quickly contained, and it seems that it was confined to the facility. All members of that unit were accounted for after the incident.

Glacial acetic acid is a hazardous chemical with a number of downstream industrial applications.

OSHA, the EPA, the Chemical Safety Board, and HCSO Precinct 8 deputies are all engaged in further investigations of the incident.
