4 tips to make your Texas holiday travels safer

As a Texas resident, you know that the weather can change in a matter of minutes, especially during the winter months. One day, Houston can experience shorts and t-shirt weather, the next there could be ice on the road. This becomes even more likely if you plan to travel for the holidays. If you are driving across the state to visit family for Thanksgiving or another holiday get-together, you might run into a whole gamut of different weather conditions, most of them bad. The last thing you want is to have a wreck or car problems while you are heading north on Highway 45 on your way out of town.

Fortunately, there are some things you can do to make your holiday travel safer. For some tips to keep you and your passengers safe during the winter months, read further.

Get plenty of rest

Before you and your family climb into the car to head out of town, get a good night's sleep. Getting behind the wheel while suffering from fatigue can slow down your reaction time if the unexpected happens on the road.

Check the weather

Keep a close watch on changing weather conditions in the areas where you will be driving. The weather in Dallas can be on the opposite end of the spectrum than in Houston, so be sure you prepare for the possibility of rain, sleet or even snow.

Do a maintenance check

If possible, take your vehicle in to your favorite mechanic for a check. You will want to make sure your tires are in good condition, all of your car's fluids are at appropriate levels, and that there is little chance the vehicle will break down during your journey. While getting stuck on the side of the road in bad weather is incredibly inconvenient, it is also dangerous. It only takes one car hydroplaning to slide into you while you are waiting for a tow truck.

Buckle up and secure your load

As always, be sure every person in your car wears their seat belts at all times. Also, be sure all luggage, presents, pets and any other items you are transporting are properly secured. If you have to suddenly hit the brakes, lose items flying around the car could cause further problems.

While the above tips can keep you safe on the road this holiday season, they can provide 100 percent protection from the actions of other drivers. If you suffered an injury due to a car wreck with a negligent driver, you might be able to file a claim for your losses.
