Texas motorcycle accident fatalities in 2016

Motorcycles are very popular in Texas. This may be because of the state's large area, and many miles of open, flat roadways, the relatively mild climate, or perhaps even the tradition of Texans being independent thinkers. Whatever the reason, many Houston residents, like those throughout the state, enjoy hopping on a motorized, two-wheel vehicle and hitting the road. These individuals do need to be aware, however, that there is an inherent risk every time they go for a ride.

Last year saw almost 500 deaths throughout the state amongst people traveling by motorcycle (taking into account those considered both 'drivers' and 'passengers'). Out of those fatalities, over 250, or a little more than half, involved riders not wearing safety helmets. Now, of course, the fact that about half of motorcycle fatalities involved those wearing helmets does not mean helmets are not effective. These statistics do not show how many accidents total occurred where a helmet-wearing rider was not killed.

It might be interesting to see how these fatalities were broken down by age group. As might be expected, younger riders had the most fatalities, with people in their 20s suffering 126 deaths. Second-highest, however, were individuals in the 50-59-year-old range, with 107 fatalities in motorcycle crashes in 2016. People in their 30s and 40s were killed 97 and 86 times, respectively, on motorcycles last year. Those over the age of 60 only experienced 64 deaths.

For the two most numerous age categories, the 20s and 50s, the number of helmet-wearing fatalities were, coincidentally, reversed. Seventy-four of the 126 people killed on motorcycles in their 20s were wearing helmets, while the same number of individuals in their 50s were going without head protection.

It needs to be remembered that each of these numbers above represent people who left behind families and other loved ones who need to pick up the pieces of their lives and move on. While some of the motorcycle accidents that occur each year will not be anyone's fault, many will be caused by a negligent driver or other dangerous hazard, and the families of those who are killed by these types of accidents may be entitled to legal compensation.
