Bryan widow leaves court in tears after facing family’s killer

Everyone is sitting on the edge of their seats; there is a silence that hangs thick in the air. A voice, quivering and powerful breaks the tension. Kristian Guerrero speaks out from the witness stand and locks eyes with the young girl who has been charged with killing her family. “You’re a monster,” Guerrero proclaims.

Former Texas State University student, Shana Elliott, was driving under the influence and crossed over into oncoming traffic striking the family’s vehicle killing Guerrero’s husband. Perhaps the most devastating loss of this tragedy was yet to come as the couple’s unborn child passed hours later due to the trauma sustained in the crash.

Repeat offender

A liquor bottle was found in Elliott’s car along with heroin and a giant stash of marijuana that police collected from her residence. On the day of the crash, Elliot had a blood alcohol content of .199, nearly to the point of reaching unconsciousness. When the incident occurred, Elliot was on probation for one of five previous drug possession charges on her record. The twenty-two-year-old was reportedly on her way back from a day at the river in San Marcus and can be seen via video from the dash cam being handcuffed in her bikini.

Does the punishment fit the crime?

Elliot admitted guilt in front of the jury and now a judge will decide her fate. The young woman is staring down up to twenty years behind bars for two counts of intoxication. This decision can ultimately double the time if the judge chooses consecutive periods; or cut it in half by electing concurrent sentences.

“I am sure you and I both wish it was you that day instead of him,” Guerrero tells Elliot without flinching. Sobs echo through the courtroom as Guerrero finishes her victim impact statement. No matter how long the sentence, no amount time will ever be enough to help fill the void left in the Guerrero’s life.
