Fighting For You

When is distracted driving most common?

Although, Houston, Texas, motorists and pedestrians are always in danger on account of distracted drivers, a recent study suggests that the time in which texting and driving is most common is around 4:00 p.m. on weekdays, right at the beginning of the evening commute.

Some attribute this to the fact that many employees are both trying to wrap up their work and head home for the day during this time, and that means there is a strong impetus to make those final phone calls or send a few emails.

This study also had some other bad news for Texans: despite stricter laws and stepped up enforcement, many drivers in this state simply are not getting the message that their texting and driving is dangerous. According to the report, Texas motorists spend a hair under 7 percent of their driving time on the phone, which places Texas not far behind the worst states for distracted driving.

Moreover, since last year, Texas drivers were spending over 30 percent longer on their phones.

If one thinks about it, no one would be willing to allow a motorist on the road if he or she had the habit of closing his or her eyes for 5 or so minutes per every hour he or she is driving a car, as that would no doubt cause accidents. Yet, some can argue that this is exactly what is happening on this state's roads given the alarming frequency with which Texas drivers are using their phones while behind the wheel.

Finding a solution to this problem has to this point proven difficult. In the interim, though, Houston residents can take some comfort in the fact, if they are hurt in car accidents caused by a distracted driver, they may be eligible to receive compensation for things like medical bills, lost wages and pain and suffering.
