Loved ones, not co-workers, main enticement to text and drive

Houston, Texas, residents might when they think of a distracted driver have in their mind a man in a nice business suit and driving a high-end sedan while making a bunch of calls to clients or sending a bunch of emails to his managers as he unsafely drives along. Others may have an image of a younger driver playing around on her phone or trying to talk to a friend while in heavy traffic.

Interestingly, though, a recent report, which was also discussed in a previous post based on other information it contained, also shed the light of truth on these common misconceptions.

While it is true that one in three people are willing to communicate with a friend, the person for whom people seem most willing to engage in texting and driving or the otherwise unsafe use of technology is one's spouse or significant other.

Almost 45 percent of drivers surveyed suggested that they engaged in texting and driving with one's spouse, with almost 60 percent of drivers who had minor children admitting to such behavior.

Speaking of children, over 20 percent of all drivers admitted to texting and driving with their offspring on the other end of the phone. For those parents of children under 18, almost 1 in 3 admitted to this behavior.

By contrast, 13 percent of drivers said they engaged in texting and driving with co-workers, while about the same number, 12 percent, said they did so with their bosses. Only a handful said they communicated with clients or their professional subordinates while driving.

No matter the reason, though, distracted driving remains illegal in Texas, and, as we've repeated so often, is very dangerous behavior that causes car accidents. Those who engage it, even if their doing so is motivated by affection, should be responsible for the damage they cause.
