HARRIS COUNTY, TX — A 4-year-old girl died Sunday morning after a single-car crash involving a suspected drunk driver on the Texas 8 Beltway near Channelview, according to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office.
The crash happened in the 4200 block of the beltway (E Sam Houston Parkway N) at approximately 4:25 a.m.
According to authorities, a woman was driving a gray Infiniti G35X on lane 3 in the southbound lanes. A 4-year-old girl was sitting in the back center seat, not strapped into a child seat and not wearing a seat belt. The driver failed to maintain her lane and veered to the right of the roadway and onto the right shoulder, where she hit a traffic control device. She lost control of the Infiniti as it continued south and collided with a concrete wall.
Medics rushed the child victim to Texas Children’s Hospital where she was later pronounced deceased.
Responding officers observed the driver showing signs of intoxication at the scene. She was later confirmed to have been intoxicated at the time of the crash, and now faces a charge of felony murder in the child’s death.
An investigation by HCSO’s Vehicular Crimes Division remains ongoing.
