Driver killed in fiery single-vehicle wreck on Eastex Fwy near Humble

HARRIS COUNTY, TX — One person died early Sunday morning after a car crashed off the Eastex Freeway and burst into flames near Humble, according to KHOU11.

Authorities said the fatal collision occurred in the southbound lanes of the freeway (IH-69) near Rankin Road at around 3:30 a.m.

A preliminary investigation shows the victim was driving a Toyota Corolla above the speed limit under wet weather conditions. As the driver attempted to take the Rankin Road exit, they lost control of their car. The Toyota struck an exit sign and a guard rail before colliding with a light pole, which caused the vehicle to quickly catch fire.

Witnesses tried to rescue the driver by breaking a window to pull the driver out, but were unable to reach the victim in time.

Humble Fire Department crews responded to the scene and extinguished the flames, but medics pronounced the victim deceased at the scene shortly after.

No further information has been released at this time.
