WALLER COUNTY, TX — Four bicyclists were hospitalized Saturday morning after being struck by a teen driver on U.S. Highway 290 near Waller, according to FOX26 Houston.
The incident occurred on a stretch of old 290 about two miles west of Waller.
A group of cyclists were participating in a long training ride for IRONMAN Texas when, about 75 miles in, a black diesel pickup truck slowed next to them. The driver accelerated, causing smoke to blow into the cyclists’ lane. One cyclist believes the young driver purposefully accelerated and slowed to blow diesel fuel onto the cyclists.
At one point during this act, the driver appeared unable to stop. Waller County Sheriff’s Office said a total of six cyclists were struck by the pickup truck.
Two cyclists were transported by airlift and two by ambulance to nearby hospitals with undisclosed injuries.
The causing driver, a 16-year-old boy, remained at the scene.
As of Saturday evening, the driver has not been taken into custody.
