Houston officer involved in fatal crash has been relieved of duty

HOUSTON, TX – A Houston police officer has been relieved of duty pending an investigation into a two-vehicle accident that left one man dead last Sunday, according to Click2Houston.

This story is an update of a previous blog post.

Charles Payne, 75, was on his way home from church when he turned left from North Shepherd Drive towards Thornton Road and was struck head-on by a northbound HPD squad car. The family of the victim believes the officer was traveling at excessive speeds at the time of the crash.

Payne would die from his injuries hours later at Hermann Memorial Medical Center. The officer, who is yet to be identified to the public, suffered minor injuries and was also hospitalized.

The officer has been suspended pending ongoing investigations being conducted by HPD and the Harris County District Attorney’s Office.
