HOUSTON, TX — A woman died early Friday in a single-vehicle collision on the Gulf Freeway in Houston’s Southbelt/Ellington area, reports KHOU11.
The crash happened on the southbound lanes of the freeway approaching Nyack Drive and was first reported at 5:13 a.m.
Witnesses say the woman was speeding as she attempted to take the exit on the freeway, causing her vehicle to slam into a pillar in the HOV lane. Other motorists stopped and tried to rescue the woman from her car after it burst into flames, but were unable to do so.
Police said the victim died at the scene. No other vehicles were involved.
The fatal crash shut down one southbound lane, in addition to the entire service road near the Scarsdale exit.
