HOUSTON, TX – Investigators have released the identity of one of the victims of a fatal accident involving a Tesla Model S on Saturday.
KTRK reports that William Varner, a 59-year-old doctor with Memorial Hermann, was one of the two men killed in The Woodlands on the night of April 17. Varner and an as-yet-unidentified 69-year-old man were found in the wreckage of a 2019 Tesla Model S that had run off the road and collided with a tree along Hammock Dunes Place in the Carlton Woods subdivision. Both bodies were found in the vehicle’s passenger seats, leading emergency responders to conclude that the vehicle had its self-driving mode activated at the time of the crash.
Federal safety regulators have launched an investigation of the incident, and we provide more details via this blog in the coming days and weeks.
